Baseband Voltage and Power in Load-Modulated Digital Backscatter

Abstract

Passive digital backscatter signals in systems like radio frequency identification (RFID) are usually received along with strong interference from a leaked carrier. The simplest way to quantify the “useful” communication signal is to separate an amplitude-shift keying (ASK) or biphase-shift keying (BPSK) component from the combined signal. This letter investigates the suitability of each in terms of basic signal theory and conservation of energy, and relates measurable properties of their baseband signals with “backscattered power.” We find that defining RFID backscatter as BPSK has particular advantages from both perspectives that may warrant adjusting current test standards.
