Interferometric measurement of refractive-index change in photosensitive glass

We report on a technique for determining the change in the refractive index of photosensitive glass. We have demonstrated our interferometer-based technique on fiber preform and bulk glass samples, achieving an optical: path-difference (OPD) repeatability

We have surveyed potential references for 1300 nm and L-band wavelength calibration. We have developed a 1314 nm methane reference for our internal calibration and are developing a carbon-monoxide transfer standard for the 1560-1630 nm region.

We describe NIST research on wavelength standards for optical fiber communications. We have developed transfer standrds that can be used to calibrate instruments in the 1510-1560 nm region and a investigating references for other regions.
